Organic food still on the rise

Organic food still on the rise despite the recession. Sales of organic food in the Netherlands rose in 2009 by 11.3% compared to 2008, reaching a value of € 583 million.

In the same period, the total Dutch food market rose by 6.9% to € 27.7 billion according to the Biologica Foundation. This implies a 2.1% share of organic food in the total Dutch food market.

 

Almost half of organic food is sold via supermarkets. Here bread (44% of total organic food), eggs (28%) showed the largest growth, being followed by dairy products (17%) and meat (18%).
